I Don’t Want to Pray!

I want God to fix this…

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

Do you ever wonder how you’re supposed to react when things happen that don’t go your way? By nature, I am a very determined person and when things don’t go my way, I get very upset. I go to God in anger and demand He fix it.

He Knows…

Isn’t it silly how at times we act like God has no idea what happened? We treat God like the situation is a surprise to Him. I recall when we were dealing with an issue with our house while living in California, I prayed and prayed, but I prayed in such a way that if God did not help us this or that would happen to us, like He didn’t know this already. We forget God knows every issue we will face before it happens.

The Message commentary on this verse, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, says, “Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.”

In yesterday’s post I shared how we often go to Google and to friends when we face issues, yet we very seldom go to God first. The reason it’s important for us to go to God first is because number one; it shows our faith and trust in Him as He governs the world. When we go to God first it helps us to stay joyful when we face issues.

I have a situation right now dealing with my second son that brings me frustration. Yesterday I sat outside and I had to remind myself that God knew this issue would come about. He knew this issue two months ago when at first this seemed like a wonderful new journey for my son– but has turned into up and down confusion. I have been angry and upset and happy then angry again, until yesterday it finally hit me. I will rejoice in this situation and continue to pray for God’s guidance. I wonder if God allows these situations to help us develop a grateful spirit? I wonder if He is trying to remind us that He is in control?

I know it isn’t easy to be grateful while in the middle of frustration that you can’t see your way out of. But can you remind yourself that God knows the situation even if it seems like He doesn’t? Instead of praying for God to fix it your way, maybe ask God to give you strength and guidance and continue to lead you down the path He wants you go.

What is it?

Did you lose your job? Is your marriage suffering? Seriously, be joyful in a broken marriage? How about be joyful that you have a Lord and Savior who hears your cry to Him, and He will guide your steps. Prior to becoming Christians, you would have thought me, and my husband hated each other! As believers and through continued prayer– God totally changed that! We’ve been married over 20 years and we have a GREAT marriage. My husband is my best friend. We pray for each other. We call each other all day. We go for walks. We go on date nights. We love spending time together.

Are your children not serving the Lord? I have a child who isn’t serving the Lord and I have been praying for this child’s salvation the past ten years. This child just spent the past year in their worst place, yet today, although I still pray for their salvation there is a glimmer of hope. I will be joyful that God is hearing my prayers.

Five months ago, we woke up to our house flooding and found ourselves (me, my husband, and our four younger children) homeless for seven weeks.

Exactly a year ago I walked away from a job I loved very hurt and confused.

In all these situations, they hurt, and I could not understand why God allowed it, but I am reminded that He governs all and I am thankful for what I have learned. I am thankful that I am a new person the more I pray and allow Him to guide these situations.

What are you going through today? Can you be joyful? Can you keep praying? Can you be thankful? Can you trust that this is God’s will and that you belong to Christ Jesus?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
